EuroCommerce statement on the passing of Jacques Delors

The European retail and wholesale sector received, with great sadness, the news of the passing of Jacques Delors. Mr. Delors played a pivotal role in shaping the European Union and he leaves behind a legacy of dedication to the principles of unity, cooperation, peace and progress.

His visionary leadership and commitment to a united and prosperous Europe, as President of the European Commission from 1985 to 1995, was instrumental in advancing economic integration and was transformative for the European project.

His work on the Single Market, the Euro, the Schengen area, enlargement and social dialogue, has fundamentally changed our sector, generating huge benefits for consumers and businesses including better prices, wider choice and increased innovation. 

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Delors' family, friends, and the European community. May his memory serve as a reminder of the enduring importance of collaboration and of our shared values in the EU.
