On 8 September 2026, representatives from European institutions, business, and civil society will gather at the European Parliament in Brussels to discuss the role of retail value chains in building a more competitive, sustainable and resilient European economy.

We are pleased to announce that João Albuquerque, Director for Advocacy and Political Affairs at EuroCommerce, will be speaking in the session “Case Studies – Retail as One of the Pillars of the European Economy”. João will share EuroCommerce’s perspectives on the circular economy, the Single Market, and the importance of ensuring that sustainability policies support European competitiveness, innovation and investment.

The event is organised by the Belgian-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce (CCBP) with the sponsorship of MEP Ana Vasconcelos and the support of Mercadona. The programme will conclude with a debate moderated by MEP Sebastião Bugalho.

Joao brings extensive experience of the European Parliament, as an MEP and previously MEP assistant and policy advisor to the S&D group. Prior to this, Joao held advisory roles in Portugal to the minister of interior and as head of office of a mayor (Lumiar, Lisbon). Joao graduated in political sciences and international relations and holds a master’s degree in history, defense and international relations from the University institute of Lisbon. Of Portuguese origin, Joao is also fluent in English, Spanish, French and Italian.
