For the third year in a row, EuroCommerce organises Payments Day!

Are you wondering how the growing list of EU payments files fit together, or concerned that they don’t?

Instant Payments, PSD3, Payment Services Regulation, Digital Euro, digital identify, cash acceptance regulation, alternative fuels infrastructure regulation, and many more coupled with emerging topics such as agentic commerce and stablecoins. Each file moves forward, but not always in coordination, creating real operational and financial consequences for merchants: acceptance costs, scheme fees, fraud obligations, chargebacks, data access, and compliance burdens.

Today, European payments rely heavily on non‑EU providers, raising questions about resilience and strategic autonomy. Geopolitical pressure and the Digital Euro project are finally pushing EU actors to work toward pan‑European coverage. But supervision, enforcement, competition policy and technical expertise remain split across Member States.

Against this backdrop, EuroCommerce’s Payments Day 2026 – One Europe, One Market for Payments will bring together the institutions shaping Europe’s payments policy future – the European Commission, the ECB, the EU Council, and the European Parliament – and the merchants. They will debate the strategic question with direct consequences for merchants: What is the EU’s payments vision, and how do we complete the Single Market for Payments?

For retailers, wholesalers, hotel and restaurant owners, airlines, and other businesses, payments are not their core business. Yet payments are the mechanism through which every euro of revenue is received. That is why the sector must be part of the conversation.

For merchants and payments professionals, this is a chance to hear directly from the policymakers and to influence their thinking. For EU institutions, it is an opportunity to explain their approach and gather feedback from the businesses that operate Europe’s payment infrastructure every day

If you want to take an active role in shaping the future of EU Payments, join the discussion at Payments Day 2026!
