EuroCommerce statement on electricity blackouts in Spain and Portugal
Press release - Competitiveness & Single Market - Consumer protection
EuroCommerce, the European association representing retailers and wholesalers, urges all citizens to remain calm in light of the current electricity blackout affecting Spain and Portugal.
Retailers and wholesalers are working closely with local authorities in Spain and Portugal to manage the impact. To prevent panic buying and ensure the safety of all, some stores may be temporarily closing while electricity is being restored.
The full impact on the sector is yet to be assessed. Disruptions on payment systems and store operations are being reported as well as cases of misinformation.
Messages are being conveyed to consumers to keep calm, to avoid panic buying and to rely on verified sources for accurate updates and guidance (e.g. through official government channels).
